Akaba is one of the travel operator Apollo’s charter destinations in Jordan, tempting you with bathing in the Red Sea. Or maybe not, as the main attractions are the excursions from the town.
The main one is Petra, a town carved into hillsides 2800 years ago. Coming out of the gorge you won’t believe your eyes as you come across the Treasury, Al-Khaznah, which is several storeys high. Altogether there are 800 buildings from the height of the Nabataeans’ time, 2000 years ago. Over time Petra’s importance as a commercial centre diminished and the town was abandoned. Petra was rediscovered in 1812 and is counted today as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.
