New rules about cards

8/25/2010

On the 1st of August, two new laws were introduced concerning payment services and unauthorised transactions with various methods of payment.

This brings Swedish legislation in line with the EU directives on payment services in all of the 27 EU countries and the EEA states of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The new rules mean increased consumer protection as well as a clearer picture for cardholder’s obligations in conjunction with credit or debit card transactions. Amongst other things, it means that if the cardholder hasn’t protected their pin code and an unauthorised transaction is performed because of this carelessness, the cardholder will have to pay an excess of SEK 1200. The obligation is limited to SEK 12 000 if the card has been used due to “extreme carelessness”. If the card has been handled in an “especially reprehensible manner”, the cardholder is responsible for the whole sum of money. You can read more (in Swedish) at www.forex.se, by going in under “kort” (cards) in the main menu.
