It’s easy to get around Budapest, by underground, tram or bus. Buy tickets in books of 10 or 20 and don’t forget to have them stamped in advance. There are a lot of persistent conductors who may give out fines equivalent to SEK 240 if you are caught without the correct ticket. Three day tickets can be bought for about SEK 100.
On BKV (Budapest’s equivalent of Stockholm’s SL) people over the age of 65 can travel for free; just don’t forget to have your driving license, national ID card or passport at hand!
The bureaux de change in Budapest aren’t to be messed wit. Buy your Forints (HUF 1 = SEK 0,04) at FOREX Bank before you leave. If you need more spending money, exchange at a bank, who will charge you less and will give you a better rate than the Hungarian bureaux de change.
And now the mandatory warning for cities: Watch out for pickpockets, especially on crowded busses and trains.
