It was a sensation in the business world when it was presented for the first time – the first plastic note. The bank behind the innovation was the Australian central bank, The Reserve Bank of Australia. First up was a 10 Dollar note.
Eight years later all of the country’s notes were made of the plastic-like material, Polymer.
Notes made from plastic are more expensive to produce than paper ones, but the savings are big. Polymer banknotes are almost indestructible and, more importantly, are difficult to counterfeit.
Nowadays about 30 countries have either totally or partially followed Australia’s example.
