3000 Hours of sun

The temperature in Fuertaventura rarely goes below 15 degrees during the winter and rarely above 37 in the summer, apart from when the island is affected by sandstorms from the Sahara. The island’s name, literally translated, means strong wind and the trade winds during the summer and the tall Atlantic waves in winter attract windsurfers all year round to this barren island. “The island of eternal spring” is the second biggest of the Canary Islands but it does feel a bit more authentic, has fewer tourists and is generally a bit calmer.

Several tourist hotels and El Mattoral airport were built at the end of the 1960’s. The number of tourists grew during the 1980’s and tourism is the island’s most important source of income.
Fuertaventura has about 75km of beaches, of which 50km are sandy and 25km have black volcanic lava sand or lava rocks. You’ll also find the Canary Islands’ biggest beach at Península de Jandia, in the south. In the north there are beaches and sand dunes at Corralejo, with a small beach in the town itself and beautiful, long beaches outside of it.  This is where you’ll find many sun worshippers and most of the windsurfers.
Ving, Solresor and Apollo are some of the companies that charter trips here. Apollo has a special triathlon week, as preparation before Challenge Fuertaventura (1900 metres of swimming, 90km of bike riding and 21 km of running), with instructor-led workouts, coaching, lectures and a starting place in the tournament, which takes place on the 13th of April 2013.
