Berlin to get a large airport

Tegel, Schönefeld and Tempelhof are all airports from Berlin’s post-war history. Soon they’ll be history too. On the 3rd of June 2012, the new large airport, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI), will start being used.

At the same time, Tegel will be taken out of use and Schönefeld will be swallowed up by the new giant, which is also nicknamed Willy Brandt airport, after the ex-Chancellor.

It is estimated that 50 million people will pass through BBI yearly. The idea is also to relieve the aerodromes in Frankfurt and Munich of long haul flights.
