Bremen - a hidden gem

Bremen is a bit of a forgotten northern German gem – which shines most during autumn and early winter. Between the 14th and 30th of October, Bremer Freimarkt is held, Germany’s oldest market with roots dating back to 1035, a festival which was at last count visited by four million people. It is followed by the traditional Christmas market from the 24th of November until the 23rd of December.

Wandering about in Bremen’s old town, Schnook, is a nice historical journey. The town hall is a dominating landmark, with the statue of the “Town Musicians of Bremen” next to it. It was built, based on the Grimm’s fairy tale about the donkey, dog, cat and rooster who escaped from their cruel masters to go and play music in the town. You might also encounter traces from the period (1648-1719) when Bremen was a Swedish duchy.

The town’s tourist office, www.bremen-tourismus.de, offers well-priced package trips, Ryanair flies directly to Bremen from Skavsta and several bus companies organise trips there.

Remember that in general, people still prefer cash instead of cards in Germany. You can buy Euros at a good rate and free of charge at FOREX Bank’s offices!
