Egyptian Pounds and Piasters

Charter travel agents are increasing their assortment of trips to Egypt. A five-hour flight to winter sun, diving and snorkelling in the Red Sea as well as historic places of interest attract many travellers. It’s important to buy your currency before travelling.

The Egyptian pound (EGP) is the currency requested “in town”. At the four and five star hotels; US dollars, Euros or British Pounds are used for paying all the extras.

Egyptian pound notes exist in the following denominations: 1 (also as a coin), 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200. A pound is worth about SEK 1.40. The notes have both Arabic and English written on them. The subdivision, Piasters, is also found in notes, of 25 and 50. You must pay attention when paying with large notes! It’s been known that unobservant holiday makers have got 50 Piastres back in change instead of 50 Pounds. There is certainly a difference between 70 Öre and 70 Crowns! Please note that FOREX doesn’t buy Piaster notes.
