Guide to Kiev

6/12/2012

A lot of Swedish supporters are expected to follow the national team in Kiev. FOREX Bank’s Travel Economist has visited the city so that he can give some information to visitors.

A more detailed version (in Swedish) can be found at http://www.forex.se/sv/Reseekonomen/Varlden/Europa/Ukraina/Din-guide-till-fotbolls-EM-i-Kiev/

The currency in Ukraine is called Hryvnia (UAH). In addition to the local currency you can also take Euros or Dollars, which you will need to change when you arrive, but be aware that rates vary a lot between different bureaux de change in Kiev.  There is a strong cash culture and it’s more usual to pay by cash than at home in Sweden. For our current rates and to order currency, contact your nearest branch of FOREX Bank.

A meat dish in a middle-class restaurant costs around SEK 70-120, a Big Mac meal around SEK 35, a beer usually costs SEK 15-25 at a pub or SEK 3-10 at a supermarket. According to FOREX Bank’s city index, Kiev has an index of 53, compared to Stockholm, which has 100.

Take bus 322 to the nearest underground station “Kharkivska” for 20 Hryvnia and then continue your journey on the tube. During the European football championship, the authorities are offering free transport, from Boryspil airport to Kiev, for 36 hours to those with a match ticket. The offer lasts from 12am on the day of the match to 12pm the day after and also applies to public transport.

The underground is easy to understand, despite the language barrier and costs 2 Hryvnia for a single ticket.

A taxi from the airport to the city centre should cost between 200 and 400 Hryvnia. Make sure you agree on the price in advance. If you need a taxi in central Kiev, ask a Ukrainian-speaking person to order one for you by phone. The taxi company needs to know where you are and where you are going. You’ll then get an estimated waiting time and price, as well information about the colour of the taxi and its make. It’s much cheaper and safer doing it this way than by stopping one on the street.
