In many European countries the national ID cards are equally as valid as a passport, which makes it practical because it fits into the card part of your wallet!

National ID cards are accepted in 22 of the EU’s 27 member countries, who have accepted the Schengen area agreement, as well Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. The countries that are outside of this co-operation are; The United Kingdom, Ireland and the summer destinations of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania, where passports are still required.
