Our travel economist in Saalbach

Saalbach has Austria’s largest continuous ski lift system and you can travel around the whole valley and to the other side without needing to take the ski buss at all. That’s why the area has been suitably dubbed the ‘Ski Circus’. Within the system there are 50 watering holes and most of them are rather quaint. Several of them offer proper after ski too. The most renown after ski can be found at the Alp guest house, Hinterhag Alm. According to devoted skiers, they have the best after ski in the world.

Every day at 5pm during the whole skiing season the ambiance reaches its absolute climax, when the owner, Evi Fersterer, leans over the banister from the building’s upper floor and throws about 300 stickers with the text “Verliebt in die Hinterhag Alm Saalbach” over the mass of people below. With flushed cheeks and their hands in the air, everyone dances the Herzerltanz, the heart dance, whilst the more hard-core veterans chant “Jeden tag, Hinterhag!” (Loosely translated, every day Hinterhag). Why not go to Saalbach too and fall in love as well!
