Price levels this summer?

You can find a pattern with pricing within the Greek tourist industry. After a summer with a lot of tourists; hotels, restaurant owners and other operators in the industry usually raise their prices markedly. Then they have to lower them when reports of “expensive Greece” affect the numbers of tourists. Price levels have been a bit of a rollercoaster over the years.

FOREX Bank’s holiday index for Greece was 80 in May 2011 and 69 in November 2011. This fluctuation mainly reflects the seasonal variation, but if price levels follow historical patterns, it should be cheap for us to spend our holidays in Greece this summer.  The economic turmoil scared off many holidaymakers last season. This is why the largest travel operators have probably managed to negotiate very good hotel deals, which partly explains their ventures in the Greek islands.
