Reduce your golfing handicap in Portugal

Many Swedish golfers start the season off early or extend it on one of the many golf courses dotted around Lisbon. The courses are well maintained and it’s easy to browse what’s on offer with a hire car. One of the reasons why many people choose Portugal is because it’s a fairly cheap country.

According to FOREX Bank’s city index from summer 2012, Lisbon is around 35% cheaper to stay in compared to Stockholm. A good example of cheap living is Aroeira golf course, which I visited in august this year.

As it was low season and the middle of summer, the golf course offered a reduced green fee of EUR 20 and a set of clubs cost EUR 40 to hire. A three course dinner in the clubhouse cost EUR 10! Altogether EUR 70 for a whole day playing golf, including food and if you’d had your own clubs it would have cost only EUR 30!

If you don’t feel like arranging your golfing holiday yourself, there are numerous companies who can help with golfing holiday packages. The best thing to do is to shop around and compare carefully what each package includes. I would recommend a package that includes car hire as you’ll get the chance to try different golf courses.

Be careful when driving though, as the way the Portuguese drive seems to indicate that they believe in reincarnation!
