Tourist pesos in Cuba

The currency in Cuba is the Peso, which only Cubans are allowed to possess. Visitors need the tourist currency, Pesos convertibles, instead, which is often shortened to CUC. The rate for a Peso convertible is set by the authorities and varies according to other currencies’ exchange rates. One CUC costs approximately EUR 0.80, which equates to about SEK 7.50.

FOREX Bank recommends that travellers to Cuba take Euros with them and exchange them at their destination. There are ATM’s but they only accept cards with Visa function – for example FOREX Visa, FOREX Bank card and FOREX Global Cash.

No cards or travellers’ cheques provided by American companies are accepted. When exchanging US dollars, bureaux de change will charge you a penalty fee, which is also a way in which they tackle the American trade embargo made against Cuba.
