The east Caribbean Dollar

7/18/2011

Around 175,000 people live on Saint Lucia, which is about half the size of Öland. A third of them live in the capital Castries. The island gained independence in 1979 and is part of the British Commonwealth.

English is spoken by most people, alongside French creole. A large part of the island is covered with banana plantations. Saint Lucia’s most famous person is Derek Walcott, who received the Nobel Prize for literature.

The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD). It is locked to the US Dollar: 1 XCD = 0.37 USD. FOREX Bank recommends buying a small amount of XCD and taking the rest of your spending money in US Dollars, which can also be used as payment.
