Tourist tax in Venice as well

9/16/2011

Venice is following Rome’s and Florence’s example with a tax on tourist accommodation. Rome introduced it at the beginning of the year, Florence on the 1st of July, and since the 24th of August the tax is mandatory in Venice. It applies to all forms of accommodation and is progressive; the nicer it is, the more expensive it is – whilst a one-star hotel costs 1 Euro per person per night, a five-star costs 5 Euros, just under SEK 50.

The tax is applicable generally for a maximum of five nights, children 10-16 years get a discount and those under 10 are exempt. The tax is paid in cash when checking out.
