Travellers who are stranded at an airport or who are waiting for misplaced luggage can now use an app to check their rights wherever they are.

  The European Commission has launched an app for smartphones which covers air and rail transport and which works on iPhones, iPads, Google Androids, RIM, Blackberry and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

  The app is available in 22 EU languages. Although presently only covering air and rail transport, it will include bus and boat travel from 2013, when these rights start to apply.

  For each potential problem the app will explain your rights. The app also gives information about to whom you can turn to complain and during more serious crises (e.g. volcanic ash or large accidents), the app also shows information and advice from the European Commission.
