The Euro, the Dollar and the Baht – Swedes’ top picks for travel money
The most purchased currency at FOREX in the first half of the year is the euro (EUR). Not surprising, with euros in your pocket, you can pay your way in more than 20 countries. The US dollar (USD) also remains strong, according to new sales figures from FOREX.

The US dollar is the second most in-demand currency at FOREX. Travel from Europe to the United States has decreased in 2025, but part of the explanation for the dollar’s popularity is that it is a valid and widely accepted means of payment in many countries around the world.
– It’s no surprise that the US dollar ranks so high on the list. With a more favorable exchange rate than just a year ago, many take the chance to buy a little extra. The Thai baht (THB), in third place, tends to be purchased in larger volumes during the winter season. Thailand remains a popular destination where cash is still widely used,” says Niklas Lydahl, COO at FOREX
Among the 80 currencies FOREX offers, four non-European currencies make the list. Along with the dollar and baht, the Emirati dirham (AED) and the Japanese yen (JPY) are also in demand. Japan offers a mix of culture and unique experiences and is one of the most sought-after destinations among Swedes, especially young people, with one in five* naming it as their dream trip.
Despite many Swedes choosing to pay by card abroad, demand for cash remains strong.
– Having cash in your pocket when travelling saves you from paying high ATM fees, gives you peace of mind, and makes you ready for markets, excursions, or tipping. A mix of card and cash is always the winning combination, wherever you go,” says Niklas Lydahl.
