Bulgaria switches to euro – FOREX accepts lev until January 31, 2026

On 1 January 2026, Bulgaria will introduce the euro as its official currency and the Bulgarian lev will be phased out. FOREX offers its customers to sell back Bulgarian banknotes until January 31, 2026.

FOREX accepts lev until January 31, 2026

"We want to make the transition from BGN to EUR easier for our customers and buy lev in all our stores throughout January," says Niklas Lydahl, COO at FOREX.

During the transition period in January, it will be possible to use both lev and euro as a means of payment in Bulgaria. As of February 1, 2026, only euros are valid in the country.

"If you're not going to travel to Bulgaria in January, take a look for live in drawers and beach bags. Many people may have some travel currency left over without thinking about it, so make sure to sell it before it becomes invalid," says Niklas Lydahl.

FOREX only buys back banknotes. As with all currencies purchased from FOREX, lev can be resold free of charge upon presentation of a receipt at any FOREX store. A valid identity document is required to complete the transaction.
