Make your cash last longer
1. 💸 Exchange offices with a bad rate
Many exchange offices in tourist areas attract with "no commission", but instead have a much worse exchange rate than official operators.
Avoid this:
Exchange your currency in advance with a provider with transparent exchange rates – like FOREX. You secure the day's exchange rate and can pick up in store or have it delivered to the nearest post office.
2. 🏧 Expensive withdrawals at foreign ATMs
Some ATMs charge high fees or provide poor rates. Especially in tourist-dense areas.
Avoid this:
Always exchange some cash already at home in Sweden. For example, FOREX has its own ATMs at airports and central stations. If you need to withdraw more, always choose to "be charged in local currency" when withdrawing abroad. Avoid portable ATMs and use those located at real banks abroad.
3. 🚖 Fake or unlicensed taxi companies
Dishonest drivers may take detours or have no taximeter at all.
Avoid this:
Use official taxi companies, fixed-price apps (e.g. Bolt or Uber) or ask the hotel to book a taxi for you. Set a fixed price in advance if there is no taximeter.
4. 📸 Free sightseeing that is not free
Guides who offer "free tours" may charge high tips at the end, or take you to shops where they receive commissions.
Avoid this:
Read reviews in advance, choose established organizers and be clear about what is expected in terms of tips.
5. 🍝 Tourist restaurants with high prices
Menus without prices, "service charges" and extra cover charges occur in many tourist resorts.
Avoid this:
Avoid restaurants right next to major tourist attractions. Check reviews on Google or TripAdvisor – and choose places where locals eat.
